Trahan a commencé à utiliser ce pseudonyme pour des enregistrements racistes chez J. D. "Jay" Miller's Reb Rebel, un label de la ville de Crowley, en Louisiane.
Ses textes contiennent fréquemment le mot nègre (en anglais dans le texte : Nigger) et font la promotion des lois Jim Crow et du Ku Klux Klan. Pratiquement toutes ses chansons dénigrent les afro-américains et les mouvements pour les droits civiques.
Trahan commence à utiliser le pseudonyme de Johnny Rebel au milieu des années 1960 lorsqu´il fonde son label Reb Rebel. Son premier titre est un 45 tours contenant les titres "Lookin' For A Handout" et "Kajun Ku Klux Klan". Il enregistre par la suite cinq autres disques aux titres tels que "Nigger, Nigger", "In Coon Town", "Who Likes A Nigger", "Nigger Hatin Me", "Still Looking For A Handout", "Some Niggers Never Die (They Just Smell That Way)", "Stay Away From Dixie", ou "Move Them Niggers North".
Deux autres titres ("Keep A Workin' Big Jim" et "(Federal Aid Hell!) The Money Belongs To Us") ne parlent pas de problèmes raciaux mais de politique, l´un dédié au procureur de Louisiane Jim Garrison concernant l´assassinat de John F. Kennedy et l´autre aux aides monétaires des États-Unis envers d´autres pays. La plupart de ces titres sont regroupés sur l´album For Segregationalists Only.
Trahan n´a jamais autorisé quiconque à prendre des photos de lui, bien qu´il prétende que de telles photos puissent être trouvées sur internet. Il déclare ne pas savoir d´où viennent ces photos.
Après près de 30 ans de silence, Trahan reprend le nom de Johnny Rebel en 2001 pour enregistrer le titre "Infidel Anthem", en réponse aux attentats du 11 septembre 2001. En 2003, il sort un nouvel album intitulé It's The Attitude, Stupid!.
L´ensemble des chansons de Johnny Rebel a été repris par des groupes et chanteurs de country sur un album de compilation intitulé The Complete Johnny Rebel Collection.

Je connaissais un peu Johnny Rebel mais j'ignorais son vrai nom et qu'il était cajun (Trahan est un nom acadien). Est-ce le même Clifford Joseph Trahan qui a écrit les paroles de la chanson "Lâche pas la patate" de Jimmy C. Newman qui fut un succès au Québec dans les années 70?

"Lâche pas la patate" non ce n'est pas le même interprète.Le Newman dont tu parles est l'un des pionniers de la musique country cajun.

Je ne parlais pas de l'interprète de la chanson mais du parolier. Cependant, en cherchant sur google, j'ai trouvé réponse à ma question sur le site http://www.johnnyrebel.org "He wrote dozens of songs for other musicians, and is credited as a writer on Jimmy C. Newman's hit "Lache Pas la Patate" and as a co-writer on Johnnie Allan's "South to Louisiana." En passant, excellent blog, bravo.

Bien sûr que c'est lui qui a écrie "Lache pas la patate". Il a commencé dans le rockabilly sous le pseudo de Jericho Jones avec des chansons comme "Black Magic" ou encore "Can A Young Love" trouvable sur beaucoup de compilations (certaines buffalo bop entre autre).
D'autres artistes reconnus de la musique cajun ont enregistrés pour Reb Rebel Records à cette époque comme Happy Fats par exemple. Mais personnellement, je trouve que la chose la plus interessante dans cette partie d'histoire est que les enregistrements aient été commandés à Jay Miller par le Ku Klux Klan. Car Jay Miller a produit tellement de bon bluesman noir comme Lightnin' Slim, Slim Harpo, Lazy Lester (bref tout le gratin du label excello). Apparement Miller avait accepté de répondre à l'offre du KKK que pour le fric, ce que Trahan à lui aussi soutenu pendant des années. Bref, il n' y a pas trop de moral dans tout ça.
